Taking a Taxi From the Airport: A Practical Guide

A taxi is often the simplest way out of the airport, particularly with luggage or late at night. A few habits make it reliable anywhere in the world.

Row of taxis waiting at an airport taxi rank

Most airports have an official taxi rank outside arrivals, sometimes with a dispatcher who assigns cars in order. That's the place to go. Inside the terminal you may be approached by people offering rides, and while some are legitimate, it's safer to use the rank or a booked service.

How fares work

Airport taxis use one of three models: a meter, a fixed fare to the city centre, or a zone-based price. Many cities publish official fares on the airport website. If the trip is metered, check that the meter is switched on when you set off.

  • Airport surcharges are common and usually legitimate.
  • Night and holiday rates may apply.
  • Tolls are sometimes added on top of the fare.
  • Large luggage may cost extra in some cities.

Paying

Card payment is widespread but not universal. It's worth having a little local cash just in case. Ask for a receipt, it's useful if you leave something in the car or need to claim the expense.

Ride-hailing apps

In many cities app-based rides pick up from a designated zone, often in a car park or a specific level of the terminal. Follow the app's directions and the airport's signs. Prices can rise sharply during busy times, so compare with the taxi fare.

If you're arriving late

Taxis are often the most practical option after public transport stops. Queues can still be long when several flights land together. If you need certainty, a pre-booked private transfer might be worth the higher cost.
