Using Public Transport From the Airport
Many airports are connected directly to the city by rail or metro. It's often the fastest option at rush hour and almost always the cheapest.
Public transport from airports comes in two main forms: dedicated express services that run non-stop to a central station, and regular metro, rail or bus lines that happen to stop at the airport. Express trains are quicker and more comfortable but cost more.
Finding the station
Follow signs for trains, rail, metro or the local transport symbol. Stations are usually underneath or next to the terminal, but some airports require a short shuttle ride. At multi-terminal airports, check which terminal has the station.

Tickets
Ticket machines usually offer several languages. Many systems accept contactless bank cards directly at the gate, which is the easiest option if available. Some express services are cheaper when bought online in advance.
Travelling with luggage
Trains during rush hour can be crowded and not designed for large suitcases. Express airport trains usually have luggage racks. Look for lifts at stations, and expect some stairs on older networks, particularly at interchange stations.
- Check the timetable for late or early flights.
- Look at the route map so you know where to change.
- Note the stop nearest your hotel before you lose Wi-Fi.

When public transport doesn't fit
If you arrive after services stop, travel with lots of bags or small children, or are heading somewhere not served by the network, a taxi or private transfer may be simpler. There's no prize for taking the train if it makes the first night harder.
