Airport Shuttle Services Explained

Shuttles sit between a taxi and public transport. They're usually cheaper than a private car and more direct than the train.

The word shuttle covers several things. A hotel shuttle is a free or low cost bus run by a hotel. A shared shuttle is a van that collects several passengers and drops them at different addresses. An airport coach runs a fixed route to the city centre or nearby towns.

Hotel shuttles

Many airport hotels run courtesy buses. They usually leave from a dedicated stop, which can be in a car park area rather than right outside the terminal. Check the timetable before you land, some run on request only, and you may need to call the hotel.

Shared door-to-door shuttles

These are booked in advance with a set pick-up window. They're good value for solo travellers, but the trip can take longer because of other stops. On the way back to the airport, pick-up times can be very early to fit everyone in.

Airport coaches

Coaches run on timetables to central stations and major hotels. Tickets can be bought online, at a desk or from the driver. They have plenty of luggage space and are usually comfortable for longer distances.

  • Check the last departure of the day.
  • Keep your ticket until the end of the journey.

Choosing between them

Hotel shuttles are ideal if you're staying near the airport. Shared shuttles work for budget-conscious travellers heading to a specific address. Coaches are best if your hotel is near the main stops. For anything else, compare with the train or a taxi.
