Renting a Car at the Airport
Airport car rental is convenient, but the paperwork at the desk can be confusing after a long flight. Knowing the key terms in advance helps.
Rental desks are usually in the arrivals hall or in a separate rental centre reached by shuttle bus. Some companies are "off-airport", meaning a short shuttle ride to their lot. That's not a problem, but it does add time.
Documents you'll need
- A valid driving licence.
- An International Driving Permit in some countries.
- A credit card in the main driver's name, for the deposit.
- Your passport or ID.
- The booking confirmation.
Debit cards are not always accepted for the deposit. Check the rental terms before you travel.

Insurance and excess
Rental prices often include basic cover with a high excess, the amount you'd pay if the car is damaged. At the desk you'll usually be offered extra cover to reduce it. Decide in advance what you want rather than under pressure at the counter.
Fuel policies
Full-to-full means you collect it full and return it full. Other policies charge for a full tank upfront. Full-to-full is usually the fairest, but leave time to refuel near the airport on the way back.
Inspect before you drive
Walk around the car and photograph or video any scratches and dents. Make sure existing damage is noted on the contract. Do the same when you return the car, especially if you drop it off when the office is closed.

Returning the car
Follow signs for car rental return, which are often separate from departure drop-off. Allow extra time for the inspection and the shuttle back to the terminal. Keep the final receipt until the deposit is released.
