Travel Insurance Basics

Travel insurance is the document you hope never to use. When you do need it, the details of the policy matter a great deal.

Official travel documents on a table

Insurance policies differ a lot, so this is a general overview, not advice on any specific product. Always read the policy wording, which is the part that actually decides a claim.

Common types of cover

  • Medical expenses abroad, often the most important part.
  • Trip cancellation and curtailment.
  • Delayed or lost baggage.
  • Travel delay.
  • Personal liability.
  • Emergency repatriation.

Common exclusions

Pre-existing medical conditions may need to be declared. High-risk activities such as some winter sports may need extra cover. Claims are often refused if you didn't follow reasonable precautions, or if the event was already known when you bought the policy.

Some destinations require it

Some countries require proof of travel or medical insurance for visas or entry. Check requirements with the relevant official authority.

Making a claim

Keep receipts, reports and correspondence. For baggage, you'll need the airline's report. For medical expenses, contact the insurer's emergency line as soon as possible. For delays, get written confirmation from the airline.
