Flying With Pets and Special Baggage
Travelling with a pet is entirely possible, but it is one of the areas where planning ahead isn't optional.
Airlines differ greatly in their pet policies. Some allow small pets in the cabin, some only in the hold, some only as cargo, and some not at all. Policies also vary by route and season, as some airlines restrict pets in the hold during very hot or cold periods.
In the cabin
Small cats and dogs may be allowed in the cabin in a soft carrier that fits under the seat in front. There's usually a combined weight limit for pet and carrier, and a limited number of pets per flight. Book early.
In the hold
Larger animals travel in a hard crate in a temperature-controlled hold. The crate must meet specific size and ventilation standards. Your pet should be able to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably.

Documents
International pet travel can involve microchips, vaccinations, health certificates and sometimes waiting periods. These rules are set by the destination country, not the airline. Requirements can change, always verify current rules with the relevant official authority.
- Check entry rules for the destination.
- Check airline-specific requirements.
- Visit the vet early, some steps take weeks.
- Carry copies of all documents.

Service and assistance animals
Rules for service animals depend on the airline and the country. Contact the airline well in advance to understand what documentation is needed.
On travel day
Arrive early, pets often need to be checked in at a counter. Attach your contact details to the crate, and include feeding instructions if travelling in the hold.
