ESTA and ETIAS Explained

Electronic travel authorisations are not visas, but for many travellers they're now an essential step before booking a flight.

An electronic travel authorisation is a pre-travel screening for visitors who don't need a visa. You apply online, answer questions and pay a fee. If approved, it's linked electronically to your passport.

ESTA

ESTA is used by the United States for travellers from countries in its Visa Waiver Program who are visiting for tourism or business for a limited period. It's applied for online and is generally valid for a number of years or until your passport expires.

ETIAS

ETIAS is the European travel authorisation system for visa-exempt visitors to many European countries. Its rollout has been planned over several years. Check the official European Union website for the current status and requirements before you travel.

Similar systems elsewhere

Other countries use similar schemes, such as electronic travel authorisations for visitors to Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. The names differ, but the idea is the same: a short online application before travel.

Applying safely

  • Use only the official government website.
  • Apply well before booking or travelling.
  • Enter passport details exactly as printed.
  • Save the confirmation.
  • Apply again if you get a new passport.

Unofficial websites may charge a lot more than the official fee. They aren't always scams, but there's usually no benefit to using them.
